Drug Intervention Programme Drug Intervention Programme

The Drug Intervention Programme (DIP) is a Home Office scheme for Class A drug using offenders with the purpose of enabling users to get  ‘out of crime and into treatment’. It is a key part of the Government’s strategy for tackling drugs and reducing crime.

Suffolk DAAT currently commissions the Suffolk Mental Health Partnership (NHS) Trust to deliver a through care and aftercare DIP service, delivered by a Criminal Justice Integrated Team (CJIT). The CJIT is delivered from various criminal justice settings, to ensure wherever a client is within the criminal justice process that they can access DIP workers. DIP workers in Suffolk are based within police custody suites, courts, probation offices and prisons.

The objective of Integrated Drug Treatment System (IDTS) is to expand the quantity and quality of drug treatment within HM Prisons by:

  • Increasing the range of treatment options available to those in prison, notably substitute prescribing
  • Integrating clinical and psychological treatment in prison into one system that works to the standards of Models of Care and the Treatment Effectiveness Strategy and works to one care plan
  • Integrating prison and community treatment to prevent damaging interruptions either on reception into custody or on release back home.

The IDTS has to work closely with the DIP, in particular to ensure that offenders receive seamless support and are retained in treatment after release.
